A low-maintenance, drought-tolerant front garden

Glendale, CA · Design & Curation by Aharo Designs Studio

A front garden shaped by stone, water-wise planting, and sculpted ground

A conventional front yard becomes a layered landscape of sculpted earth, drought-tolerant planting, and a dry riverbed. Curated stone and a hand-painted Talavera vessel bring movement and a distinct focal point to the garden.

Design approach Low-water planting, natural stone, and practical irrigation arranged into a welcoming, low-maintenance front garden.

A front garden shaped by water and stone.

The design brings together sculpted elevations, a dry riverbed of multi-toned Arizona river rock, and a drought-tolerant planting palette. Sandstone steps and granite boulders give the garden a clear structure while allowing the natural textures to lead.

Sculpted levels and planting

Shaped soil mounds and segmented ground-cover zones create movement through the front yard. Native succulents, grasses, and flowering perennials add layered color while keeping the planting suited to a lower-water landscape.

Riverbed and stone

Multi-toned Arizona river rock creates a dry stream through the garden, accented by large granite boulders and sandstone steps set on a concrete base. The contrasting forms guide the eye and establish an inviting route through the space.

A hand-painted focal point

A Mexican Talavera vessel provides a vivid centerpiece among the stone and planting. Overhead micro-sprays and localized subsurface drip support the garden, with a Wi-Fi smart controller and low-voltage lighting completing the infrastructure.
